The Google Flock project involved a complete redesign of the Google Nest Thermostat, tailored specifically for office environments to address the needs of disengaged users and simplify shared device interactions.

We began by identifying the unique challenges faced by office environments, where employees often feel reluctant or indifferent toward engaging with shared smart devices. Our goal was to redesign the Google Nest Thermostat to simplify interaction, minimize friction, and encourage effortless control.

The result was Google Flock—a user interface designed with an approachable, bento box-style layout that blends function and familiarity. Inspired by sticky notes, the design ensured users could quickly adjust settings without feeling overwhelmed. Key sections included temperature control, scheduling, energy usage, and room monitoring, all presented in a way that prioritized clarity and ease of use.

Our team incorporated subtle design elements to engage even the most reluctant users, such as dynamic temperature adjustments and energy usage insights presented in rotating formats (e.g., cost and kWh). By focusing on straightforward navigation and reducing cognitive load, the interface empowered users to take control without requiring extensive effort or expertise.

The redesign successfully addressed the needs of an unwilling office employee, proving that thoughtful design can turn even the most disengaged users into active participants. This project underscores the importance of tailoring technology to meet the context and needs of its audience.
